SKB Paleo Challenge

SKB Paleo Challenge

Join us for the 30 day SKB Paleo Challenge!!! It kicks off on Monday 7/7/2009, so get all of the booze, pizza, nachos, and bar-b-q out of your system this weekend, and then start strong on Monday!!!

We will be supporting each other, sharing recipes and burning some fat! Let us know if you will be participating by commenting on the blog! Also email colin@seacoastkettlebell.com for your complete SKB Paleo Challenge Guide!

Q: What is the Paleo Diet?
A: Eat meat, vegetables, nuts, seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar!

Q: What about potatoes and corn?
A: Not vegetables, sorry. Too high on the glycemic index and too high a glycemic load.

Q: What’s that mean?
A: The sugar these foods carry is delivered too rapidly into the bloodstream (high glycemic index) and the amount of sugar (glycemic load) is too high.

Q: There’s no bread on here?
A: No grains! Grains are high on the glycemic index, high glycemic load and gluten is proven to cause inflammation in your body, slowing recovery time and making you more susceptible to other illnesses.

Q: What about whole grains? Aren’t they good for you?
A: No. The only difference between “whole grain” and refined white flour is the ratio of fiber to the other stuff.

Q: I can’t live without booze. How much can I have?
A: Technically, none! Whiskey, beer, and most alcoholic beverages are made from grains and this is one of the things we want to avoid. If you absolutely must drink, try wine. Wine is not grain-based, but it still has a high carb load. Drink it sparingly.

Q: What about portions? Isn’t portion control a big deal?
A: Eat until you feel satisfied. If you’re eating a typical American diet then our major concern at this point is food quality. Address portions/macronutrient ratios and meal timing at a later date. Eat to satiety. Base each meal around a lean protein, a healthy fat and as many vegetables that you can eat!

Q: I need more guidance. Give me amounts.
A: For you solid-number-types, 3-6 ounces of protein (meat, fish, eggs, tofu if you must), 6-10 ounces of veggies, 2-4 ounces (roughly a handful) of nuts or half an avocado or ¼ cup of olive/coconut oil. Don’t get hung up in the numbers. Eat, enjoy, live your life, repeat.

Q: That’s a lot of cooking/I don’t cook/I can’t cook because I don’t have a kitchen/I really don’t have time for all this.
A: Preparation is key! Veggies are easy to add to every dish. You can use frozen, canned or fresh veggies! Prepare your proteins in batches and refrigerate until needed.

Q: What about eating out?
A: Same basics apply. Sub steamed vegetables for the potato; hash browns out, fruit plate in. Don’t eat the bread. Evaluate your priorities and make smart choices.

Q: What about a cheat meal?
A: If you must, loosen up for one meal a week. If you are one of the “all or nothing” personality types, then you may want to skip the cheat meal altogether.

Q: And when the Challenge is over? What then?
A: You’ll have a whole new outlook on eating and a new set of skills to go forward with. In 30 days, you will have eaten more fruit and veggies than ever before, lost a significant amount of body fat, and increased your performance in the gym!

Sign me up, I’m in! I have a few recipes I will post.

  2. DieZel says:

Sweet, will I look like the guy in the picture if I go on this diet?

  3. Will says:

Wait so we are starting on Monday? The 6th? I thought maybe we were getting a bonus day of garbage.

My question is similar to Dr. Diezel’s: if I eat paleo, will I finally grow a full, luscious beard?

  4. Sapp 6 says:

I also thought we were starting on Tuesday, you know so we could take those few “wake up” shots Monday morning to cure our hangovers?? Oh wait, not everyone has Monday off?

Either way, count me and Nikki in. Whats everyone talking about the guy in the pic….he’s from Michigan, doesnt everyone look like that after the age of 25?

  5. Charlie says:

Game on! Count me in …

  6. Reggie says:

I’m in! I’m using my after workout weight today of 205 as my starting weight.

  7. Megan says:

Totally in! …from afar, with ya all in spirit tho!

to quote a friend…”as we pause to celebrate the work of this countries founders, i wonder when ‘life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness’ became stress, poor health and the pursuit of laziness!” let’s keep turning that back around!

    Rock on everyone!

Brett and I are going to give it a go.

In our favor: Our CSA gives us 1 whole chicken, 3 lbs of beef/pork, and 10-20 lbs of veggies a week.

Not in our favor: Our CSA also gives us a half gallon of milk, a quart of yogurt, and a pint of cheese.

Anyone got ideas on what to do with the fresh, local, organic dairy??? We’re thinking ice cream – but that would probably ruin us once the challenge is over….

  9. Kiarna says:

I’m in. My freezer is now packed with meat from the farmers market and my garden has an overload of greens. Because I’m hoping for weight loss I’m going to reserve the nuts and avocados as treats. I’ve had to wean myself off of dried fruit which was surprisingly hard. Who knew dried mangoes were like crack.

For folks on CSA’s with dairy ask if you can swap for egg or meat credit. Often the dairy is in higher demand and the meat is already in deep freeze. Or you can just ask them to pay the dairy credit forward so you can get the dairy next month.

The paleo +raw dairy is a hugely advocated lifestyle diet by the Weston A. Price Foundation:

Enjoy your last day of Bread and Cheese, see you at the gym!!

  11. -Ug says:

I’m in. So is Dez!! She is wagering on me falling off the wagon first!!! And she called me competitive! LOL

  12. Des says:

Yeah, I’m up for it, and my mom is definitely going to cheat first. It’s on at our house.

  13. Reggie says:

Wow! 4 days in and I feel great. I may go for my favorite and most productive workout today

    4 rounds for time:

    500 meter row
    25 air squats
    25 pushups

  14. Sapp 6 says:

I think that the Paleo Diet is the most healthiest thing you can do for your body….hands down, I am sold!

  15. Tony says:

Just goes to show that there is “food” and stuff you can put in your mouth and swallow. I’ll stick with food.
By the way, awesome job on the workout this morning Tony!!!
Anyone else notice that neither Sapp nor DieZel were anywhere to be found….??

      • Sapp 6 says:

Yea, I was a total tang and slept right through it! My neighbor forced me to go bar hopping last night. I didnt wake up with a hangover so I think the paleo diet also keeps you from being hungover after a night of boozing. Im convinced, its the most awesomest diet ever.

        • Christian says:

That is THE poorest and weakest excuse I’ve ever heard. W-E-A-K!!!!!!!!!!

          WEAK!WEAK!WEAK!WEAK!WEAK!WEAK!WEAK!

You owe us many burpees for such wussy behavior.

      • Tony says:

Thanks.. I felt bleeeegh in the middle but took your advice and fought through it after a bit of break..I actually had the energy to go longer.

You guys did awesome on that tall box jump.. I went over to the other teams box jump after 3 rounds and thought..wow this is too low…. hehe

My back is feeling those deadlifts though woooooo

        • Christian says:

You mock our box jumping skills? That does it! Consider yourself and any of the other guys on your team yesterday, challenged to a box jump contest. Forget a burpee contest, i’m holding you to a box-jump contest!!!

By the way, I don’t mean those sissy “land on the edge of the box with half your foot on the box and half hanging off the edge”… NO… I’m not sure if you’ve seen how I do them, but I do them properly. Both my feet land with strength in the middle of the box.

No half assing it. See you at the gym… ready to crush you at box jumps!

  16. Reggie says:

This Challenge and a lot of Concept 2 is going to do it for me!

  17. Kiarna says:

    Anyone else still trucking along?

I’m doing very well and think I will stick to it for a while longer. Picking up the fresh local meat at the farmers’ markets makes the difference.

    • Steve says:

I would say we have maintained 85% or so. A few too many trips out to eat have thrown the wrench in it. I have dramatically cut back dairy, otherwise it hasn’t been that much of a change as we cut breads, potatoes and pasta out months ago. I haven’t lost pounds, but I think I have leaned out a bit more. Keep it up!
